ATKINSON, Clarence Anthony Etheridge

Picture
Service no 318
Trooper
4th Light Horse Regiment

Trooper Clarence (Clarrie) was my Grandfathers brother. He was one of 9 children.

Clarence joined the 4th Light Horse Regiment aged 22 years and 2 months on the 18 August 1914. He lived in Collingwood and was a carpenter by trade. Clarrie had also completed 2 years service as a Senior Cadet. He stood 5 foot 8 inches and weighed 10 stone 6 pounds, had black hair, and brown eyes. He was subjected to a medical examination at Broadmeadows and deemed fit for service.

His diaries commence with preamble after news of their pending departure for Europe, and then on the 19th October 1914 when they embarked on the ship HMAT Wiltshire, there are regular entries. The ship arrived in Egypt on the 1st Dec 1914 and for the following 5 ½ months they were subjected to training and of course “waiting”.

On the 15th May 1915, Clarence was given orders to move with A Squadron. After travel to Alexandria with about 3000 dismounted Light Horse, continued preparation was made for the onwards journey.

On the 19th of May, Clarrie arrived at the Dardanelles, to participate it what became known as the Dardanelles Campaign and also the Gallipoli Campaign on the Gallipoli peninsular. He landed at Gallipoli on the 21st May at about 6.30pm.

Trooper Clarence served as a medical orderly, despite being a crack shot with his rifle. He was also a very proficient horseman, despite being a city boy.

On the 26th June 1915, Clarries 23rd birthday, he again opened his diary to record the day. After tending to a number of wounded, and receiving terrible shrapnel treatment from the Turks, later in the day Clarrie and Corporal Harold Bay, went for a swim off Gaba Tepe. They were returning to the lines through a communications trench, when a sniper shot hit Trooper Clarence in the back of the neck, passing through the base of his skull. Despite the best efforts of 2 Doctors, Clarence died without regaining consciousness.

He was buried in a temporary grave in “Shrapnel Gully” by Father Bergin and then eventually interred in Row B, Grave 5 in Beach cemetery.
